Project Description:
This is an opportunity to show the richness of artistic production within Berkeley. Approximately 30 artists will be selected through an open juried competition. Artwork selected will be exhibited in the Berkeley Martin Luther King Civic Center Building, 2180 Milvia Street, distributed throughout public areas on five floors. Selected artworks will be displayed for approximately one year, through the middle of 2013. Purchase Prize of up to $3,000.

Eligibility:
Open to all artists living and/or working in the City of Berkeley. NO ENTRY FEE TO PARTICIPATE!

Application Deadline:
February 8, 2012 (Wednesday) by 5:00 pm entries must be uploaded to BayVAN or mailed with a postmark.

How to Submit:
An Artist Resume and up to five images will be juried through the artist's submission of materials through BayVAN, or by mail if internet access is not available. (Berkeley Art Center, 1275 Walnut Street, Berkeley, CA 94709) Please submit up to five images.

Berkeley Art Center will host an informational "How-to-apply" using BayVAN software with Nicole Neditch, on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 4pm. The event will leave room for questions and include presentations by other arts organizations about their yearly calls for entries. Presentation:
Accepted work must be professionally framed (when appropriate) and ready to hang or display.

Artwork Specifications
Artwork to be considered may include 2-dimensional, framed works on paper, canvas or board, oil or acrylic paintings, photographs, lithograph or digital prints, drawings, collage, mixed media and sculpture. There are a few spaces for lightweight, freestanding sculpture no more than 24" x 24" x 60" and wall mounted sculpture. Freestanding sculpture must include a pedestal and if appropriate, plastic vitrine. Wall mounted sculpture must not be excessively heavy. Size limitations: Spaces in City Hall range from smaller areas to large spaces. Minimum size of work is 8" if the work is a series, and there are several pieces in the series. Most spaces will accommodate work approximately 22" x 30". Maximum size of wall space is 8' x 10'. The work selected will be appropriate to a public space and a diverse audience. The work should be of the highest quality and reflect the aesthetic and cultural values of our unique community.

Terms
When you apply to this Call for Artists you agree to allow the City of Berkeley to use the images and information submitted with this application for their review process, and also to promote the project, which may include use of the submitted images throughout the City of Berkeley on the City of Berkeley website or on printed materials.

The work submitted is your own and does not infringe anyone's copyright or ownership. The art work was created within the last five years.

All information contained herein does not constitute either an expressed or implied contract. The provisions of the Call for Artists are subject to change. The Civic Arts Commission reserves the right to reject all entries submitted to this Call for Artists.

Awards and Purchase Prize:
Honoraria of $150 will be awarded to each artist selected for the exhibition.

NEW! Purchase Prize of $3,000 for select work(s)! Berkeley Civic Arts Commission will select the purchase of artwork for the City's permanent collection (up to $3,000) from one of the artists selected in the exhibition.

Civic Arts Commission Guidelines
Artwork is selected on its aesthetic merits. Art will be chosen with appropriate regard for the nature of the space and the audience. This gallery addresses the viewer directly on the public right of way. Art must exhibit consideration for viewers' sensitivities to violence, sexual expression and negative portrayals of diverse populations.

Selection Process
All applications submitted by the deadline will be reviewed for completeness, and screened by an open-peer Selection Panel. The Selection Panel may include arts professionals appointed by staff, Civic Arts Commissioners, and city staff.
