Cie Goulet

Artist Statement:

Coming from a printmaking and painting background, Cie Goulet continues to reinvestigate landscape with a contemporary immediacy.  In her prints and oil paintings, she is drawn in particular to the visual dynamism of landscape and the possibilities for visual excitement.  Her work relies on black as a background color emphasizing the use of clear juxtaposed brilliant color and light.  Though often working from photographs or rough sketches, the newest body of work has relied a great deal upon direct experience and imagination, with sole concerns for the sensuality of composition and a sense of place -  Although these landscapes are not always meant to replicate a specific geographical place.  They often challenge the landscape genre and expand our perception.   At the same time, the transcendence of light  energizes these works, and calls into play emotional responses – warmth, nostalgia, and often, familiarity. As critic Kevin Francis remarked in an exhibition a decade ago – “Cie Goulet succeeds as a landscape artist because she revivifies those rare moments of exhilaration and wonder that we experience in nature.  The spell that she is able to cast through color and imagination testifies to her technique.”
